CH.TOWN—000

Photography

I spent a lot of my early time in NYC feeling like an outsider or a tourist. Looking for ways to avoid this feeling I set about with the idea that if I kept returning to the same neighborhood, its nuances and layers would unveil themselves for me. I could use my camera to get to know people and places. So every Friday morning for a few months I visited Chinatown. Walking its winding streets and alleys, meeting the people who went about their lives in much the same ways week after week. The city felt more like home than it ever had as I began recognizing people and they me. COVID-19 forced me to call the project off. The streets growing emptier and me feeling more and more like a tourist again. Maybe one day I can return to that routine, but for now I have fond memories of the moments I captured.
